WATCH'S
CORE VALUES
We
have an unshakable belief that even the
poorest women and men can make socially
beneficial decisions if they are given
suitable opportunities and environment.
However, the way in which opportunities
are created can actually have the effect
of destroying people's confidence, or
it may serve to build and strengthen self-confidence.
The imposition of ideas and technologies
from the outside is often detrimental
to rural people's self-image. We believe
disadvantaged women and men would be only
too willing to accept innovation if it
suits their surroundings and situations,
if they are recognized as equal partners
in change. As development and social workers
we need to become sensitive to their situations,
rather driving our own ideas and concepts.
But this kind of sensitivity will not
be possible unless we create an environment
which welcomes their input and experience.
